Waking Up

It was summer 2022 in Buenos Aires...

I woke up, took a shower and... and I did not know where I was, or why I was there...

A distorted, vintage pocket watch on sand

The Loop

"Why am I here?"

"Because our mother died, and we came to do everything needed", my sister told me

... 5 minutes later:

"Why am I here?"

my sister freaked out

Bright abstract cubist faces with question marks

And the pattern repeated again and again. A cycle of trying to catch the moment and losing the moment...

Dark corridor with neon red text LET LOST IN GIFT

The Void

Dark silhouette with text LOSST AND M ILOST

{NOTE: everything here is what other people, family and friends, told me. I have no recall, no memory, no "sense" that anything happened;

around 8 to 10 hours lost of my hard drive}

Operational

Surreal red head with a tree inside a blue window, missing context

Surprisingly, I knew who I was, the names of my family, my friends.

I was operational: walking, talking, drinking, and operating things.

Maniacally I tried to log into my work laptop: again and again, until I locked myself out.

Diagnosis

Overwhelming landscape with floating mountains

Desperate, my sister called to my wife and friends. The first suggestion was to call emergency services.

And check that it is not the feared Cerebrovascular accident (CVA).

Cleared of that, the next question is what to do...

Man in desert with a globe inside his open head

There was a hint, maybe it is "transient global amnesia"

Sparks

Maybe already passed 4-6 hours since the event started... My wife 6 hours time difference and 14 hours flight was trying to calm me down on the phone, with no much luck. My sister and another friend supported and were on the watch making sure I will not run away in the street

After that some sparks, some reconnections.

I had a glimpse of a friend looking at me from the front of a car "Easy, we will be soon at the hospital"

Then, maybe some 2 hours later? Another one, where a doctor helps me to move from the bed (?) to a wheelchair (?) and...

The MRI

Dark corridor

then the fully reconnection starts, the sense of "I", that strange loop, starts consolidating again, and the first thing that "I" saw and hear is the brutish sounds of a MRI, and in my nose the ceiling of the scanner...

Somehow I know I'm inside on the MRI scanner and somehow I do not freak out...

From that moment on, there is total stream of continuous memory and the sense of "I". After the scan finishes I remember myself frantically trying to connect the dots.

Or really trying to fill in the gaps between the few dots "I" remember: in the shower, someone talking to me when I'm in a sofa, my friend in the car, the doctor telling another friend "he is Ok, but we will do the MRI to discard everything"

Aftermath

Getting out of the hospital, who paid for? who took care of contacting the travel insurance? Now my sister, more friends outside awaiting. My friend who brought me in his car, and my other friend, a doctor himself, who talked to the specialist: "Are you back? All good?"

The reconnection to my "I", to my "self" took sometime to be fully sync with... whatever was keeping me operational during the "incident".

My actual "I" remembers the aftermath as a moment that I was like numb, and one part trying to fill in the gaps between the few points I could recall, and being now fully operational in a social situation: my friends were very worried. My wife was with anguish and awaiting a new update

Resolution

"I" walked back to our apartment. They walked with me. We all walked together.

Walking was a good way of becoming one-self again.

I was tired, but after a good sleep next day, all good.

And that's it, after that nothing. Studies: nothing.

The doctor told me the best recommendation

"Stop trying to put together your memories. They are not lost: they never were"
